Description

St. Barbara drawn in a Modernized Byzantine Style.

Saint Barbara, also known as The Great Martyr Barbara, was born in the mid-3rd century to a rich pagan, which due to her beauty, locked her in a tower to protect her from the world. She secretly converted to Christianity and chose a life of consecrated virginity. A bathhouse was built for her, upon which she instructed the builders to install three windows, creating a “Trinity of Light.” It became a place of healing and many miracles occurred there. Upon revealing her Christianity to her father, he tried to stab her, but she escaped. Eventually she was caught, locked up, tortured, and starved. Through it all, God gave her the strength to stand firm in her faith. She was eventually condemned to death by beheading.

The U.S. Army Field Artillery Association and U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Association hold the Order of St. Barbara as an honorary society. St. Barbara is the patron Saint of armorers, artillerymen, and architects.
